Arjen Robben praised Bayern Munich as the German giants destroyed Basel 7-0 at the Allianz Arena to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Germany striker Mario Gomez became the eighth player to hit four goals in Europe's premier club competition in the demolition of the Swiss outfit. The flying Dutchman struck the opening goal of the night and he felt it was an important moment as it quickly settled his team. Robben scored a brace and Thomas Muller added the other goal on a wonderful night for the Bundesliga giants to secure progress with a 7-1 aggregate victory.
He told Sky Sports 2 HD: "It was a relief for the side with the first goal of the night and then there was two and three which followed very quickly and then we were comfortable. "I think we showed we were having plenty of fun on the pitch and we have a lot of quality in the team and I think that we showed it." Asked if he felt that was as well as Bayern have played this season, he said: "Well, maybe. "We can be happy about tonight, but we have to stay with our feet on the ground."
Robben also admitted it is an extra incentive for the club to reach the final this season as it will take place on their home turf. "Of course, we had a very difficult period after the winter break, but the last two matches, last Saturday (against Hoffenheim) we also scored seven and three days later again, so I think you could say that we're back on track and hopefully we can continue until the end of the season. "On our day, I think we are very dangerous. I wouldn't say we are the favourites to win the Champions League, but we've shown already two years ago when we reached the final, but we'll see what comes up with the draw and we will look further."
"I think it's a big dream of the club," he said. "There are some people inside the club to bring Bayern Munich to a certain level and to make it a club as big as it is now.
